Brilliance (Saturation) – The
strength or purity of the intensity of the hue.
Carat - Most people compare carat weight
to size. The larger the diamond the more it weighs. The weight of
a diamond is expressed in carats. The word carat originated from
the carob tree or Ceratonia siliqua. See our Four
C's section for more information.
Characteristic color – The
basic, overall color of a fancy-colored diamond, or Moissanite.
Color -
This light dispersion, or color flash, has no effect on the technical
grading of color. The absolute finest colorless stone carries a D rating,
descending through each letter of the alphabet to Z... See our
Four
C's section for more information about Color.
Clarity -
Moissanites are not separated into clarity grades (like diamond) because
Charles and Colvard™ has
set strict specifications that each stone must meet before being released
to distributors. See our
Four
C's section for more information about Clarity.
Crown - The top
portion of a Moissanite extending from the girdle to the table.
Cut -
The cut of a Moissanite has the most effect on its sparkle, or brilliance.
Since all of our
Moissanites are cut only by master diamond cutters,
you are assured that each stone that comes from MoissaniteFineJewelry.com is
of the highest quality that can be found anywhere. For more information
please see our Four
C's section for more information.
Culet - The facet at the tip
of a gemstone. The preferred culet is not visible with the unaided eye (graded "small" or "none").
Depth - The height of a gemstone
measured from the culet to the table.
Depth
of Color – The combination
of tone and saturation that determines how noticeable a color is.
Diameter -
The width of the Moissanite as measured through the girdle.
Fashioning – General
term used to describe the entire process of manufacturing a polished
Moissanite.
Fire (Hue) – The
basic impression of a color, the component that gives its family
identity – the “reds,”
the “blues,” the “greens.”
Girdle - The narrow band around
the widest part of a Moissanite.
Gold - One quality
of gold is that it is easily formed into various shapes. This has
made it a premium
choice for jewelry artisans throughout the centuries.
See our Gold
and Platinum section for more information.
Luster - a gentle sheen
or soft glow, or the manner in which the surface of a stone reflects
light. All
of our Moissanites have more luster than a fine diamond.
Normal color range – Range
of diamond colors from colorless to yellow and brown brown. Only
near-colorless Moissanite graded as "VG - Very Good" is
available for sale at MoissaniteFineJewelry.com
Pavilion - The bottom portion of
a Moissanite, extending from the girdle to the culet.
Platinum - Platinum, whose atomic
symbol is Pt on the periodic table of elements, is naturally gray,
or silver in color. The specific gravity of platinum is 21.5, which
is heavier than gold. Platinum for
jewelry, as opposed to gold,
is used in a nearly pure alloy, which makes for a much heavier
piece
than the same design made in gold. See our Gold
and Platinum section for more information.
Table - The largest facet of a gemstone.
Tone – The
relative amount of lightness to darkness of the color
